The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone. It opens to a 7.6-inch inner screen, folds down to a 5.4-inch phone you can actually use one-handed, and starts at $2,999 CAD. Pre-orders open Friday, October 16, and it ships Friday, October 23.
I watched the whole event expecting a hinge. What I did not expect was a slide about Peanuts animations designed to make toddlers look at the camera.
That is a real feature. It is called Kid Cue, and it exists because Apple’s engineers have clearly stood in a living room at 5 pm trying to photograph a two-year-old who will look anywhere except the lens. There is a $2,999 phone here, and buried inside it is a solution to a problem every parent on my Instagram feed complains about weekly.
Let’s get into it.

What is the iPhone Duo, and how is it different from other foldables?
Apple is late to foldables. Samsung has been shipping them since 2019. So the interesting question is not whether Apple built one, it is what Apple waited for.
Two things, as far as I can tell.
The first is the crease. Apple put a nano-texture finish on the inner display, the same matte treatment you get on their high-end monitors, and it reduces glare while making the fold line harder to spot. The hinge is built from more than 100 components and holds the middle of the screen flat when it is open.
The second is continuity. Both screens use the same aspect ratio. That sounds like a footnote. It is not. It means your app does not jump, stretch, or reflow into something unrecognisable when you open the phone mid-scroll. Content just gets bigger.
New Apple CEO John Ternus called it “the most transformational change to iPhone since the original,” which is exactly the sort of line a CEO says at his first keynote. Take it with the appropriate grain of salt. The hardware still looks properly clever.
The camera features Apple built for people with kids
This is the part I actually care about, and it is the part most tech coverage will bury under chip benchmarks.
Kid Cue plays Peanuts animations on the outer display while you shoot with the rear cameras. Your kid looks at Snoopy. Snoopy is directly above the lens. You get the shot. Ten years of waving car keys next to my head, over.
Smart Take watches the scene using on-device AI and fires the shutter when people are actually posing. If you are the parent who is always missing from the family photo because you are the one holding the phone, this is aimed squarely at you.
Duo Preview shows the live viewfinder on the outer screen, so whoever you are photographing can see their own framing. Handy for teens who want approval rights over their own picture, which, fair enough.
Duo FaceTime puts a second person on the outer display during a call, so both grandparents can be in frame without squashing their heads together into one phone.
And because the rear cameras are the good ones, you can now shoot a selfie at 48MP and check your framing on the outer screen. Everyone’s group photos get sharper by default.
The specs behind all this: a 48MP Fusion Main camera with a 2x Telephoto built in, a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide that does macro, 4K120 recording in Dolby Vision, and Cinematic effects you can apply after the fact at up to 60fps. Under the inner screen there is a hidden FaceTime camera that disappears when you are not using it.
Does a foldable make sense for a family?
Here is where I want to be straight with you rather than sell you something.
The case for it. Split View means two apps side by side on a phone for the first time. Grocery list beside a recipe. Soccer schedule beside the group chat. When you set it down it becomes a StandBy photo frame or a kitchen clock without being plugged in. The 7.6-inch screen is genuinely a better shared object than a 6.3-inch one, which matters when two kids are watching something in the back seat.
The case against it. A bigger screen in your house is more screen in your house. That is not a moral failing, it is just physics. If your family already negotiates screen time daily, adding a device that unfolds into a small television is a decision worth making on purpose rather than by accident.
I have written before about how most Canadian families have screen rules and how few of us actually keep them. A foldable does not change that maths. It just makes the temptation prettier.
Will it survive a kid?
Better than I expected, on paper.
The frame is grade 5 titanium. Ceramic Shield protects the back and Ceramic Shield 2 covers the front with three times the scratch resistance of the previous generation. It is rated IP68, so a spilled juice box is survivable. The inner folding display gets a scratch-resistant coating and a nano-textured cover layer made from a polymer Apple says is up to 40 percent stiffer than the industry norm, with high-strength glass above and below the panel and custom adhesives that let the layers slide like pages in a book.
That last detail is the honest answer to “won’t it crack along the fold.” The layers are designed to move against each other instead of fighting the bend.
I still would not hand it to a four-year-old. But the $179 Folio with the built-in kickstand is not a bad first purchase, and it doubles as a stand for hands-free FaceTime with the grandparents.
Is the iPhone Duo worth $2,999 in Canada?
For most families, no. I will say that plainly.
Three thousand dollars before tax is a used car, a season of hockey, or roughly six months of daycare depending on where you live. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,749 CAD and shares the same A20 Pro chip, the same computational photography pipeline, and the same Siri AI. You lose the fold. You keep almost everything else.
Who the iPhone Duo is actually for: people who already carry both a phone and a tablet and want to drop one, creators who shoot and edit on the go, parents of older kids who will genuinely use Split View for work, and anyone who upgrades every year and has the budget baked into their life already.
Who it is not for: anyone buying it because it is new. Anyone whose current phone works fine. Anyone whose honest answer to “what will I do with the big screen” is “watch more YouTube.”
Better same-brand alternatives: the iPhone 18 Pro at $1,749 CAD gets you the variable aperture camera, which is arguably the most useful new photography feature Apple shipped this year. If your goal is family photos, that is the smarter buy. And if your current phone is an iPhone 14 or 15, Apple Trade In credits of up to $1,415 CAD change the maths on all of this considerably.

The Duo took the headline. These landed the same day.
iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
The genuinely new thing is variable aperture. Six laser-cut blades physically open and close, adjusting depth of field and light the way a real camera lens does. Narrow it to f/4 and everyone in the back row of the group shot stays sharp. Widen it to f/1.48 and low light stops being a disaster.
There is also Apple Reference Image, which signs sensor data at the moment of capture so you can prove a photo was not edited. In a world of AI slop, that matters more every month.
Battery is the other headline: up to 45 hours of video playback on the Pro Max. Colours are black, silver, glacier and a new burgundy. From $1,749 CAD for the Pro and $1,899 CAD for the Pro Max. Pre-orders Saturday, September 12, in stores September 18.
Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4
Both watches get the new Health Sensing System and the S11 chip. Heart rate is now measured every five seconds all day, and HRV up to 24 times more often than before.
The feature parents will notice is readiness: a 0 to 10 daily score built from your activity, training load, vitals and sleep, with one of four recommendations. Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It. After a night of broken sleep with a sick kid, having a watch tell you to pace yourself is either useful or infuriating, and I suspect it depends entirely on the morning.
There is also Sound Recognition, which alerts users who are deaf or hard of hearing to sirens, alarms, doorbells or a baby crying, without needing an iPhone nearby. That is a real accessibility win.
Ultra 4 starts at $1,099 CAD with up to 50 hours of everyday battery and 45 hours of outdoor workout tracking. Series 12 arrives in aluminum, titanium and a new ceramic finish. Both pre-order today, in stores September 18.
AirPods 5
Active Noise Cancellation in the cheap AirPods. That is the story. They remove up to 50 percent more noise than AirPods 4 with ANC, and Live Translation now works across the entire AirPods line.
$179 CAD, or $209 CAD with the Wireless Charging Case, which adds volume swipe on the stem and five hours of playback with ANC on. Available September 18.
Audio Intelligence, and a privacy note worth reading
Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 are getting Live Rewind, which shows the last 15 seconds of a conversation as text, and Siri Recap, which summarises conversations afterwards.
If your first reaction was “so my watch is listening,” Apple has clearly anticipated that. The S11 chip includes a hardware-isolated compartment called Secure Exclave that processes audio in isolation and deletes it immediately. No recordings are created or stored. The features do not identify speakers. Live Rewind plays an audible chime and shows a full-screen animation even on silent, so people around you know it is running. Every feature is opt-in.
That is a better design than I expected, and worth knowing before someone in your family group chat panics about it. Both arrive in beta later this year.

Apple uses a nano-texture finish that minimises how visible the crease is, along with high-strength glass above and below the folding panel and custom adhesives that let the layers glide past each other to relieve bend stress. Apple has not claimed the crease is eliminated.
Is the iPhone Duo waterproof?
The iPhone Duo is splash, water and dust resistant with an IP68 rating, tested to a maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes. Resistance is not permanent and decreases with normal wear.
Does the iPhone Duo work with a physical SIM card?
No. The iPhone Duo is eSIM only worldwide. eSIM is supported by Bell, Freedom, Rogers, Telus and more than 500 carriers globally.
Can you use an Apple Pencil with the iPhone Duo?
Yes, later this year. Apple says iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C on either display, for notes, sketching and marking up documents.
Should I buy the iPhone Duo or the iPhone 18 Pro?
For most families, the iPhone 18 Pro at $1,749 CAD is the better value. It shares the same A20 Pro chip and Siri AI, and adds variable aperture, which is the more useful camera upgrade for everyday photos. Choose the Duo if you would genuinely replace a tablet with it.
