The new Ford Explorer isn’t quite the luxurious new Fusion Energi, it’s not quite the brute strength of the F150 but something different, while taking a little from each.
Let’s start off with how it looks, because we all know that the cover is really how we judge a book. It’s around the size of a Land Rover, but has more curb-appeal. It’s got curves in the right places and you know it’s got something going on under the hood. Once I got a closer to the Explorer, I started to notice some really nice details, like the automatic folding side mirrors and pleasingly swept-back profile.

When you have a look inside then you’re going to start to really fall in love with it. The model I borrowed had all the trimmings, including a seat that had built-in A/C, heat, lumbar support adjustments AND a massage. My other favourite feature, aside from the attention to detail on the light-up cup holders, is the folding extra seating at the back. It’ll go from 3 roomy backseats to 6 with a press of a button.

The Explorer is perfect for a family car, as well as if you’re looking for something a little more capable. It has all the off-road settings you could possibly need for the unforgiving Canadian landscape, as well as lots of comfort and interior space for both family camping trips and the school run.

Driving this feels safe and responsive. When you’re strapped in and heading down the road, you know that you’re in a solid machine. It steers really lightly and accelerates with plenty of power. Just a tap on the gas pedal and you’re off, nipping through traffic and past those pesky left-hand-lane hogs.

During my time with the 2017 Explorer, I’ve taken it up to Squamish, around downtown Vancouver, and then up to Kamloops, BC to put it through it’s paces. I was also heading up to Kamloops for the Iron Sommelier event to help fund safe spaces for young moms through the A Way Home, an initiative to end youth homelessness in the community. Disclaimer – Thanks to Ford Canada for loaning me the truly excellent Ford Explorer 2017. It really is a fantastic car. Also, apologies to my family, friends, and neighbours for my very public infactuation over this car. Did I mention it gives you bum massages (also back and lumbar massages are available)?
