Picture this: you’re popping into the local coffee & donut shop (as one does), and suddenly you stumble upon the most gorgeous collaboration between 49th Parallel Coffee and a Vancouver ceramics brand called Fable. A brand I hadn’t heard of before, but there it was, a mug in my wife’s favourite colour, just sitting above the donuts. Maybe it was the coffee scent and the sugar wafting up my nose, but I was immediately invested. The perfect cup of coffee deserves the perfect cup — and just like that, I was hooked. What started as casual admiration for some beautifully crafted cups quickly spiraled into a full-blown obsession with everything this Vancouver-based homewares brand represents.

The 49th Parallel Collab

Let’s be honest — it was the 49th Parallel Coffee x Fable Cappuccino Cup Set that first caught my eye. There’s something about the marriage of Vancouver’s coffee culture with locally-designed ceramics that just works. The collaboration makes perfect sense when you think about it: two Vancouver brands, both obsessed with quality and craftsmanship, coming together to create something that elevates your daily coffee ritual.

But here’s where things got interesting (and slightly dangerous for my wallet). After seeing those cappuccino cups, I found myself falling down the Fable rabbit hole, and friends, it’s a beautiful place to be.

What Makes Fable Tick?

Fable brings people together for laughter and storytelling through sustainably crafted artisan homeware that elevates everyday moments at home — and honestly, that mission statement hit me right in the feels. In a world where so much feels disposable, here’s a brand that’s genuinely committed to creating pieces that last.

Founded in Vancouver, BC, in November 2019, Fable isn’t just another homewares brand jumping on the sustainability bandwagon. These folks are the real deal. As of September 2022, they’re proudly a Certified B Corporation, which means they’ve committed to meeting rigorous social and environmental performance standards, accountability, and transparency. In fact, they published their 2024 Impact Report for everyone to see.

The Values That Made Me a Convert

Here’s what really sealed the deal for me: Fable’s commitment to responsible manufacturing. Their ceramics are produced in a 100% zero-waste facility, which is pretty incredible when you think about the traditional ceramics industry. But they didn’t stop there — every single product is durably crafted for everyday use, because what’s the point of beautiful dinnerware if you’re too scared to use it?

The practicality factor is huge for me. All of their ceramics, flatware, and drinkware (including glassware and stemware) are dishwasher safe. Their ceramics are also microwave safe and oven safe up to 450ºF. This isn’t precious, display-only dinnerware — this is the kind of stuff that’s meant to be lived with, used daily, and loved for years.

The Aesthetic That Speaks to My Soul

I can see that the stylistic longevity of their products is, not only because of the sustainability and transparency focus but the design style is much more modern take, and it’s not too in your face, and it’s not too old timeless classic, says CEO Joe Parenteau, and he’s absolutely right. Fable has mastered that sweet spot between modern and timeless that so many brands struggle with.

Their Base Dinnerware collection is pure perfection — clean lines, beautiful proportions, and that slightly imperfect, hand-crafted feel that reminds you these pieces were made by actual humans, not machines. The color palette is dreamy too, with options like Blush Pink that add just the right amount of warmth without being overwhelming.

My Current Fable Favorites

The Base Dinnerware Set: This is the foundation of any good tableware collection. The plates have the perfect weight — substantial enough to feel quality but not so heavy that doing dishes becomes a workout.

The 49th Parallel Coffee x Fable Cappuccino Cup Set: Obviously, I have to get these after they started this whole obsession. The size is perfect for that morning cortado, and they feel amazing in your hands.

The Glassware Collection: Because sustainable doesn’t mean sacrificing elegance. These pieces are stunning and surprisingly durable for everyday use.

The Real-World Experience

What I love most about Fable is that they’re not trying to be precious about their products. Pieces that are all designed to match each other and items that are all crafted ethically and sustainably — but also meant to be used. I’ve been putting my Fable pieces through their paces (hello, microwave reheating and dishwasher cycles), and they’re holding up beautifully.

There’s something deeply satisfying about using dinnerware that you know was made with intention and care. Every meal feels a little more special when you’re eating off plates that were crafted by artisans who take pride in their work.

The Vancouver Connection

As someone who appreciates local design and manufacturing, I love that Fable is keeping things close to home while still scaling responsibly. Their Vancouver store at 2871 Granville St even has a café component, which feels very on-brand for a city that takes its coffee culture seriously.

Vancouver — South Granville

The fact that they’re expanding thoughtfully (with stores in Toronto and even a pop-up in New York) while maintaining their Vancouver roots and values shows they’re scaling with intention, not just chasing growth for growth’s sake.

Why This Obsession Feels Different

Look, I’ve had my fair share of home décor obsessions over the years. But something about Fable feels different — more intentional, more aligned with how I actually want to live. It’s not about having the trendiest plates or the most Instagram-worthy table setting. It’s about investing in pieces that will grow with you and still feel right in five or ten years.

Fable feels like a breath of fresh air in a world of fast fashion and disposable everything.

The Bottom Line

Sometimes you stumble across a brand that just gets it right — the design, the values, the execution, the customer experience (seriously, Kate was so helpful and lovely). Fable is one of those brands. Whether you’re starting from scratch with your dinnerware or looking to upgrade what you have, these pieces are an investment in making every meal a little more special.

And if you’re still on the fence, maybe start with one of their collaborations or a small set. Trust me, once you experience the quality and thoughtfulness that goes into every Fable piece, you’ll understand why I’ve gone from casual admirer to full-blown evangelist.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some very serious browsing to do on their website. My coffee cups are feeling lonely, and I think they need some matching plates to keep them company.
