A Dad’s Guide to Voting Options in the Upcoming British Columbia Election

As the upcoming provincial election in British Columbia approaches on October 19, 2024, voters across the province are preparing to make informed decisions about who will represent them in the Legislative Assembly. This guide aims to provide an in-depth look at the main political parties, their platforms, and the candidates running in North Vancouver, Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, and Surrey. I should preface this by saying that this is unsponsored and impartial, and I’m still unsure who to vote for. Oh, and since it took me so long to write this, if anything has changed, send me a message and I’ll get it fixed.

Before that, here’s my wishlist for a candidate who wants my vote:

Protected Natural Areas: Preserve and expand protected natural areas to safeguard biodiversity and offer more opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking and wildlife observation.

Green Infrastructure: Invest in green roofs, living walls, and tree planting initiatives to enhance urban environments, reduce heat islands, and improve air quality.

2. Support for Regenerative Agriculture Initiatives

Sustainable Farming Practices: Promote farming methods that restore soil health, increase biodiversity, and capture carbon, contributing to climate change mitigation.

Funding and Incentives: Provide financial support and incentives for farmers and agricultural businesses that adopt regenerative practices.

Education and Research: Invest in research and educational programs to advance regenerative agriculture techniques and share knowledge among the farming community.

3. Affordable Housing Solutions

Increase Affordable Housing Stock: Accelerate the construction of affordable housing units to meet the growing demand and reduce homelessness.

Inclusionary Zoning: Implement policies that require new developments to include a percentage of affordable units.

Rental Assistance Programs: Expand support for low-income renters through subsidies and rent control measures to ensure housing stability.

4. Regulation of Short-Term Rentals (Ban on AirBnB)

Ban or Strict Regulation: Enforce or impose strict regulations on short-term rental platforms like Airbnb to alleviate the housing shortage and make more units available for long-term residents

5. More Outdoor Pools for Suburban Areas

Seasonal Activities and Events: Use these spaces to host community events, swimming lessons, and water safety courses during warmer months.

Community Recreation Facilities: Invest in building outdoor pools in suburban neighborhoods to provide accessible recreational options for families and individuals.

Health and Wellness: Promote physical activity and well-being by offering swimming facilities and programs for all age groups.

Reduction or Elimination of Political Lobbying

Equal Representation: By reducing lobbying, smaller organizations and individual citizens can have a more equitable opportunity to have their voices heard in the political process.

Enhance Democratic Processes: Limit the influence of special interest groups and corporations on political decision-making to ensure that policies reflect the general public’s will.

Transparency and Accountability: Implement stricter regulations on lobbying activities to increase transparency, prevent corruption, and hold elected officials accountable to their constituents.
