It’s early morning and I’m the only one awake, for now. It’s still dark outside and I’m walking softly across the kitchen floor. I don’t want to wake the rest of the family as these are just a few, precious, quiet moments before the day begins.

First things, first. Coffee.

I open up my Keurig coffee maker, put in a K-Cup pod of my favourite Breakfast Blend and close the lid and hear the piercing of the foil lid. I set the coffee size to my usual setting. It’s two-shy of the largest one so I get a lot of flavour and still have a sippable mug of hot coffee to drink while I sit down and get through a chapter of the autobiography of Ansel Adams that my friend sent me from back home in the UK. It’s a thick book that I just love to pick up but rarely dedicate enough time to sink into.

Usually, by the time I’ve finished my first coffee of the day, I hear my daughter’s bedroom door open and she bounds out like a well-rested baby tiger. Her hair is huge and she’s full of smiles.

“Daddy!”

She fills me up with happiness and reminds me of my purpose. We hug and I put my book away. As she clings to me, I try and negotiate breakfast. She wants the cereal we ran out of, I make myself toast with peanut butter and she eats it. Then she settles in front of the TV for one short show, I clean up the breakfast things and get myself ready for work.

As part of the cleanup, I grab the used K-Cup pod from the coffee maker and take off the foil. The coffee grounds now cooled go into the green bin, or straight onto my garden. Recently I’ve been adding them to my roses which are starting to bud. The plastic part that held the coffee and kept it fresh is recyclable, so can go straight into the blue bin (the filter can remain), ready for collection.

Step One
Step Two
Step Three and done!

All the crusts that my daughter refuses to eat get thrown out for the birds. They barely land before grabbing them and flying off again. Recently, the crows have been thanking me with a few sticks as gifts. I’m waiting for something a little more shiny, but we have a good thing going right now.
